The city of Hoover was incorporated in 1967 and named for local insurance company owner William H. Hoover. First settled in the 1850s, the area had become known as the Green Valley community in the 1930s and remained mostly residential until 1980 when the city acquired much more commercial property. Hoover today is home to the Riverchase Galleria, one of the largest shopping centers in the Southeastern United States, comprising a combination of retail, hotel and office space near the junction of Interstates 459 and 65.
